Softball regionals: Dobbs Ferry sweeps into state final four

NANUET — The last Section 1 Class B softball team to reach the state final four had been Pearl River in 1999. But now Dobbs Ferry is going, too.

The Eagles defeated Section 8 champion Oyster Bay 4-1 Tuesday at Nanuet High School in the Class B regional final, their second victory of the day in the super-regional format. Dobbs Ferry had gotten that far with a 5-1 win over Highland of Section 9 earlier in the day.

"We're so excited," Eagles shortstop Hayley Bingham said. "We played really well. We worked really hard, we hit really well, played clean defense, and the whole team is so excited."

The Eagles (23-2) face the Section 5 vs. Section 6 winner in a state semifinal at Waterloo High School on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Eagles got things started early against Oyster Bay when third baseman Andrea Abbatiello led off the game with a home run over the left fielder's head.

"Leading off is a lot of pressure," Abbatiello said. "I stayed relaxed up there and it paid off."

The Lady Baymen (12-12) tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Eagles pitcher Jacqueline Crews issued a bases-loaded walk to Danielle Aarons.

The Eagles got the lead back in the fourth. Casey Devlin, batting with the bases loaded, lifted a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Keri Bongiovanni. Nicolette Addorisio scored on the play.

Addorisio's two-run single against pitcher Kerri Apicella extended the Eagles' lead to 4-1 in the fifth.

"I was very confident at the plate," Addorisio said. "This girl was throwing really fast, and my timing was on. She kept throwing me pitches outside, and the key was that I was fouling off a lot of pitches and making her throw me the one that I wanted."

Crews earned the win with a three-hitter. She walked two and struck out nine.

As they get ready for Saturday's trip to the state final four, the Eagles want to continue to play their

"We don't change anything we've done throughout this entire run," Eagles coach Neil Abbatiello said. "We play Dobbs Ferry softball. We played hard on defense. We work offensively. We do whatever we need to do and let another team worry about us."

"We want to do well and show everyone what this area can do," Crews said.

Dobbs Ferry in the Class B regional tournament

What a double header by the Eagles today.

They played incredible in both games and honestly… if they play this way on Saturday; I’m not too sure who can beat them.

Anyway… not to get ahead of myself here but let’s get into my thoughts on the regional final. I give these girls a heck of a lot of credit. They race over from Heroes field and then find out they have to wait because the Long Island game had to go to extra innings. What impressed me the most about the team in that scenario was that the team was able to score and score right away; thank you Andrea Abbatiello for the first inning home run. I was very impressed with the poise of the Eagles young stars, Abbatiello, and Bronwyn Bingham just to name a few. They’ve played impressively. Bingham had incredible day defensively in the regional final. Where I sat, which was by the scorers table, and they were all impressed with the way she played in the field.

I really do like this team offensively and how the way Neil Abbatiello coaches. He’s really aggressive as a coach. Not everyone would want to have their clean up batter bunt no matter what, but he asked Grete Falck-Pedersen to do just that. That happened in the top of the fifth inning. That helped set up Nicolette Addorisio who then proceeds to drive in two runs on a single to basically put the game out of reach.

I was impressed with Jacqueline Crews all year and especially after the sectional championship game but equally impressed after the regional final. This isn’t me blowing smoke; In the regional final, she got into early trouble after she had the bases loaded and gave up a walk to Lady Baymen third baseman Danielle Aarons. She settled down an only allowed one hit the rest of the game. That’s poise under pressure. In this game, she allowed an earned run on three-hits, two walks and struck out nine. I wonder how her arm will feel in the morning but she should be proud of herself in the way she pitched.

In the regional semifinal, the Eagles finally got a chance to play a full game at Heroes Field. hand hits mic… Is this thing on… Bueller… Bueller…

Anyway… What else can I say that I haven’t already said these last two days. What a shot by Addorisio in the top of the third inning. She told me after the game that she’s more of a line drive hitter and it’s great to see her pop one over the left field fence.

This team top to bottom has been impressive all year long and they are showing that in this tournamemt. They are the first Class B team to make the state final four since Pearl River was in Class B back in 1999. They will play the winner of Section 5’s Mynderse and Section 6’s Olean Saturday at 11 a.m. in the state semifinals.

Congratulations to the Eagles and we’ll see you in Waterloo.
